Ooligan Press’ Write to Publish Conference this May 21st-22st

Ooligan Press is hosting its third annual Write to Publish conference!

Ooligan is a student run, non-profit trade press, operating in conjunction with PSU’s Master in Writing and Publishing programworkshops and lectures from published authors who are chalk-full of sage advice. Speakers will include Oregon Book Award winners David Biespiel and Willy Vlautin, as well as Hawthorne’s own Loretta Stinson!

The conference is a great resource for anyone interested in the industry. The goal is different from other conferences in that it doesn’t seek to workshop the creative act of writing, but to assist writers in the often daunting task of finding a publisher. Workshops will cover ideas such as marketing yourself as a writer, developing a relationship with an agent, and understanding industry trends.

Write to Publish is May 21st and 22nd at PSU. Purchase a full pass to Day One and you get free admittance to Day Two. You can also enroll in workshops on an individual basis.

We Did It All @ Wordstock 2010

Now's the time to lend a hand to Wordstock 2011, 2012 and beyond.

We’re so sorry that we’ve been negligent here with the blog. It’s been a busy summer and we had to focus on our authors, books and book tours. Now that it’s officially fall we’ll do our best to stick to the weekly blog schedule. Please ~~remind us~~ scold us if we don’t.

This year’s Wordstock was filled to the brim with fantastic workshops, readings, panels and more and between all of us here at Hawthorne we managed to play a part in just about every type of event Wordstock offered.

We really liked where we were in the book fair this year — sandwiched between the Attic and Tin House — great company. We also liked the fact that our authors did some great panels and readings.

Here’s a bit of what we saw and did last weekend at the 6th annual Wordstock. Cheers to everyone who volunteered for and helped organize this year’s Portland literary extravaganza aka Wordstock. You rock.

Little Green on the Road

Loretta Stinson has been cruising up and down the West Coast doing all sorts of book events for Little Green this summer. So the map and wheels in this book trailer above by Loretta’s partner Ben Rosenberg have a double meaning these days in regard to Little Green and Loretta.

Last week, Loretta was in the Bay Area doing readings and events at Book Passage, Green Apple Books and meeting with folks from San Francisco Domestic Violence Consortium and The Riley Center. Hawthorne Books Roundup Pt. 2

Sometimes we like to put out a spread — a smorgasbord if you will of everything going on here at Hawthorne Books. With such a diverse and interesting list of titles and authors it’s hard to keep track of all the good things going on. These roundups are a way for us to take stock and appreciate all that we’ve got. And share it with you, of course.

LORETTA STINSON & LITTLE GREEN

Loretta Stinson has been doing all sorts of book events and interviews for Little Green since it came out on June 1st. The next big dates on the horizon are late August when she sets off for the Bay Area with readings at Green Apple Books on Wednesday, Aug. 25th and at Book Passage on Thursday, August 26th. We’re hammering out the details at the moment but we know that the San Francisco Domestic Violence Consortium will be participating in the Green Apple event and we’ve got some other things brewing in the area as well with various domestic violence organizations and crisis centers.

FRANK MEEINK ON THE HISTORY CHANNEL’S GANGLAND

Frank Meeink of Autobiography of a Recovering Skinhead has been busy with all sorts of projects. In the middle of his 20-plus city book tour this spring/summer he took time to film this History Channel segment that airs Friday night….

We’re so pleased with the drop dead gorgeous final cover for Lidia Yuknavitch’s upcoming spring 2011 Hawthorne Books title The Chronology of Water — designed by Adam McIsaac at Pinch. And just so you know, there will be a book belly band available for booksellers concerned with the nudity.

SCOTT NADELSON & PLOUGHSHARES

Scott Nadelson’s short story collection Aftermath will be published by us next summer but in the meantime Scott has been busy teaching at Willamette University and, of course, writing, writing and more writing. Ploughshares published Nadelson’s Dolph Shayes’s Broken Arm in its spring 2010 issue guest-edited by Elizabeth Strout and you can read the story in its entirety on their site.

So many great people showed up last night for Loretta Stinson’s Little Green book launch party. Even though it was a Sunday night and on the later side with a 9pm start — it was a packed house. Some people in attendance include Debra Gwartney, Eduardo Fernandez, Tony Wolk, Hawthorne Books authors Kassten Alonso and soon to be Hawthorne authors Lidia Yuknavitch and David Rocklin. Since March 30th, Autobiography of a Recovering Skinhead’s Frank Meeink has been on his 20-plus city book tour and this week he lands in Portland. From Ames, Iowa, to Chicago, Phoenix, New York City, Boston, LA, Las Vegas, and more Frank has been zigzagging across the country for book readings and events.

We’re looking forward to spending the better part of a week with him here and since we’re good at sharing we hope you’ll join us. Come one, come all!
