Biography

Rhonda Hughes is the publisher at Hawthorne Books in Portland, Oregon. Now in its 17th year, Hawthorne has published literary fiction and nonfiction to consistent critical acclaim and numerous awards, including the Oregon Book Award, Barnes & Noble’s Discover Great New Writer Award, The Great Lakes Colleges Association New Writers Award, the Langum Prize for Historical Fiction, and many others. Film options and publishing rights to Hawthorne’s works have been sold worldwide.

Prior to founding Hawthorne, Ms. Hughes had an extensive career in book production and printing. She led production for Toppan Printing in San Francisco, working with leading publishers such as Chronicle Books, University of California Press, and Twelve Trees/Twin Palms to produce high-quality gravure art and photography books before moving on to serve as director of international sales for a print broker. In 1992, she founded Print Vision and has produced books and publications for clients including Gibbs Smith, McGraw-Hill, Sasquatch Books, Tin House, Chronicle Books, and Portal Publications.

Ms. Hughes is known for her keen sense of story, a deep commitment to her authors, and bottom-line sensibility when bringing work to market. She holds a Master of Arts in English Literature and completed the Yale Publishing Course.
